School Start on March 3rd, 2014 After the long winter break school started at the beginning of March. We have 15 new children that attend our kindergarten. Also we could hire a new teacher, Ms. Sanjita Lama. She has worked in another elementary school in Darjeeling before and we are sure that our school will benefit from her experience.Unfortunately we also had 4 log-offs. The reasons are manyfold: during winter there are hardly any job opportunities. Therefore many families go down to the lowlands to find work. Some of them are lucky and settle there. In one case the grandparents of the child decided to move to relatives because the parents were so unpredictable due to alcohol abuse that they were not able to take care of the child anymore. So we can only hope that the children are doing well and will be able to attend a school again at their new home. First we were pretty sad at the beginning of the school year since we have every intention to foster and promote the kids all the way thru school. On the other hand we are sure that we could lay a good basis for a valuable education. Maybe the fate of the child with the addicted parents is an incentive to plan a dormitory for such children in the far future. It is especially these children and the needy families that we do want to support. So now 84 children attend the following classes at St. Anthony´s School:Prenursery with class teacher Miss ChristinaNursery with class teacher Miss MukhiaLower Kindergarden with class teacher Miss BinitaUpper Kindergarden with class teacher Miss AmritaClass 1 with class teacher Mrs. RaiClass 2 with class teacher Miss Sanjita LamaThe current staff consists of 6 teachers, 2 aids who especially support the teachers of our prenursery- und nursery class and our principal Rohit Pradhan. For the following school year we will probably hire another assistant teacher to help with preparations and general support. Thanks to a donation of Mr. and Mrs. Madaus the snack and milk project can be continued. Every day the children get a cup of milk and a piece of fruit or an egg.April 2014Once again we (Stephanie Lücking, 1. President and Guido Uhlenberg, board member) just had to travel to Darjeeling to admire the development that our St. Anthony´s school had taken in the meantime. On our first day we had a warm welcome at the school with a stage programme that consisted of dances, songs and a piece of theatre. At the same time the finale of the dance contest took place. The students performed traditional Nepalese dances and alsodances to present Bollywood hits and rap. 2 pupils from each class had made it to the finale. The jury consisting of the direction and the dance teacher now had to decide about the winner of each class.During the following days we attended each single class during instruction and we wre amazed about the progress the students had made.Direction, teachers and aids are still dedicated at a very high level to bring the school forward and implement new activities everyday. Besides the regular classes there is monthly competition with drawing, dance, reciting poetry, songs, calligraphy. Each Friday the students of class 1 and 2 clean up the proximity of their school: “Green Friday”.The Environment Day has become a fixed part of the year as part of Environment Week in Darjeeling (tree planting), also the school trip of all pupils, teacher´s day, sport festival, scholl festival with art exhibit and our medical camp with preventive medical checkups.May 2014During the week of June 12th thru 16th we had school safety day at St. Anthony School. The students did specific exercises also how to behave in earthquake situations.End of May we had a calligraphy contest as usual.June 2014At the beginning of June environmental week took place in the whole district of Darjeeling. Our students participated in planting trees. The classes 1 and 2 walked up into the tea garden for one hour. The Kindergarden classes planted trees and flowers around the school. The city of Darjeeling had given the seedlings. The local newspaper reported this successful activity. The students of our class 1 and 2 will participate in a Taekwondo course this school year. More sport activities will be offered soon.
